October: Smells like pumpkin spice and book challenges
Bookish news, giveaways, a profile of Nancy Churnin, and new mini lesson on sensory language!
On Not Turning Into a Pumpkin
It’s October, which means pumpkin spice and… Banned Books Week. We’ve all read the alarming statistics and seen the photos of classrooms with bare bookshelves. I want to focus on how we as creators, teachers, and librarians, keep going after reading the news of the latest school district implementing policies designed to keep books out, instead of welcoming them into the classroom.
Whenever I feel discouraged about the size of the problem and my own smallness, I turn to the amazing young people in the two anthologies of young activists that I’ve had the privilege to co-edit and illustrate: NO VOICE TOO SMALL and NO WORLD TOO BIG.
Greta Thunberg was almost consumed by her despair over adults’ inaction on climate change. But instead of giving up, she took a small action which connected her to a few others who who shared her feelings. That first small action led to more that changed her life and eventually the lives of many other young people around the globe.
If you are working in a district where every book has to be vetted for “appropriateness,” or worrying about challenges to your library acquisitions, or struggling to create in an environment that feels hostile to your voice and vision - know that you are not alone. We all came to this work because we care about kids and understand the importance of kids’ relationships to books. While some adults don’t value your work, kids do - especially kids like Greta, who are neurodivergent, or have mental health challenges, or are alone in the crowd. And their potential to change the world is yet untapped.
Keep going! The world needs your magic.
